NEW AGE vs. GRADE BASED QUALIFICATION
by posted 12/04/2011

The CYLA  Club Administrators overwhelmingly voted to adopt new US Lacrosse rules regarding age-based classification for the 2012 spring season.  Teams will now be grouped in divisions on the basis of age, not grade. Thus, playing levels are now defined by when the player was born, not what grade he is in. This correctly places like-sized players within playing divisions;

The CYLA has considered age-based rules for years for several reasons: 1) it would help reduce size disparities between players (especially important with the new youth concussion legislation taking affect January 1, 2012, 2) almost every non-lacrosse youth sport league uses age-based playing divisions, and 3) most youth lacrosse leagues across the country use age-based divisions thus we fall in line with the rest of the country.

Age-Based Playing Divisions

The CYLA voted to adopt age-based playing rules but with birthday defined single-year playing divisions. The following table summarizes the divisions:

Born On or After      Playing Level             Age on 8/31/2011       Likely Grade

9/1/96*                       U15                             14 or younger*            8th
9/1/97                         U14                             13 or younger              7th or 8th
9/1/98                         U13                             12 or younger              6th or 7th
9/1/99                         U12                             11 or younger              5th or 6th
9/1/00                         U11                             10 or younger              4th or 5th
9/1/01                         U10                             9 or younger                3rd or 4th
9/1/02                         U9                               8 or younger                K-3rd

*Any player who was born before 9/1/96 but who is in 8th grade can play in the U-15 division; in no instance can a 9th grader play on a U-15 team.

Important points to remember:

1) The oldest player on the team defines in which playing division the team competes. For example, if two players on a team were U-15 qualified and the rest of the team is U-14 qualified, the team must play at the U-15 level. Conversely, if the two players move up to a U-15 team then the remaining players could play at the U-14 level;

2) Any player/team may play up to a higher level playing division;

3) The Competition Committee will continue to place teams into “Red”, “White” and “Blue” divisions within each Playing Level based on the team information that Administrators/Coaches submit to the CYLA this spring;

"Inside Lacrosse" names Denver #1 for Lacrosse
by posted 10/01/2009

Cheyenne Mountain Lacrosse Club, Lacrosse
Inside Lacrosse magazine names Denver Best Overall Lacrosse Town and the Best Pro Lacrosse Town in its October issue.

According to the article, Inside Lacrosse searched the globe for the 10 best lacrosse cities, with the criteria being a unique blend of great lacrosse culture, successful teams and an ever-growing enthusiasm for the game.

Denver received a 99 percent rating for its pro teams, the National Lacrosse League's Colorado Mammoth and Major League Lacrosse's Denver Outlaws. Denver also received a college rating of 90 percent and a high school rating of 96 percent.

The magazine called Denver "a professional mecca," citing regular sellouts for Mammoth games at the Pepsi Center and the MLL's best crowds at Outlaws games at Invesco Field at Mile High.
The article went on to say: "Don't forget the college game either. University of Denver made all-decade-worthy news this summer by hiring Bill Tierney, while Colorado State, in nearby Fort Collins, is a four-time MCLA champ.

"Top high school teams like Kent Denver and Cherry Creek have held their own against the country's best for years. And youth lacrosse is continuing to explode — the Colorado Youth Lacrosse Association, started in 1991 with two squads in Denver, has expanded to 275 teams." Baltimore was ranked No. 2, and Long Island, N.Y., was third.
